Project Type

Book Jacket

I designed a book jacket cover for the book Jurassic Park illustrating a key message from the book to capture the attention of the audience and make people read the book.

Book Summary

Is a unique 1990 thriller and a cautionary tale against genetic engineering. It follows several characters invited to a mysterious island where dinosaurs have been recreated using ancient DNA. A series of strange animal attacks begins this book, setting up the scene for the chaos to follow as unprepared paleontologists, doctors, and children go to an amusement park on an island that has creatures that were extinct. They battle for survival while also trying to prevent the dinosaurs from escaping to mainland Costa Rica where they can cause far more destruction.

Target Audience

Teenagers, young adults and adults, between the ages of 12-50. It's a book for people who like science fiction and are interested in dinosaurs.

Objective

Accurately represent the book and capture the attention of the audience to get people to read the book.

Concept

The overall message I tried to convey is how dinosaurs have been created and brought to a time and place that is no longer fit for them.  People thought they could control everything, but the situation got out of control. The dinosaurs were forced to adapt to their new environment and that caused a great negative effect on people.

Solution

Design a book jacket that has a dominant, bold and powerful style.  I chose the colors: red and black to convey danger, power and chaos. I used the color white to create a high contrast between the text and the background. I illustrated a t-rex walking on Earth and the skeleton of the t-rex reflecting underground to symbolize the return of the dinosaurs to a new era that is not their own.
